Year roundAbout the reserve
The Old River Bed nature reserve is a Shrewsbury Town Council nature reserve and is home to the Beaver Project.
A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), The site is swampy and great wetland habitat for insects, fish, birds and mammals but the ecosystem is impacted by the fast growth of trees such as willow, which would eventually dry the site out and dominate over the swamp plants if left unchecked. In partnership with Shrewsbury Town Council we built an 8ha enclosure to house two beavers to manage the scrubby trees through their ability to "coppice" trees and reduce their impact on the sensitive wetland habitat.
This is the first urban beaver release north of London and a wonderful opportunity to bring wildlife and people closer together and demonstrate the benefits of beavers in our environment.
