My motivation
Libby, Scotland
I’m Libby, and I’m currently completing a research development internship in sustainable aquaculture (basically farming in water) at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban. In 2022, I began using my spare time to volunteer as a young leader for the Scottish Wildlife Trust. As a young leader my aim is to ensure that young people's voices are heard and taken seriously during climate discussions. I also aim to empower other young people to take action that helps combat climate change, and raise awareness about the beautiful variety of wildlife that we have right on our doorstep.
Coastlines and seas are really important to communities; by supporting jobs, providing food, and just being a place for people to relax in. I believe it’s really important that we balance the needs of communities when managing our coastline and seas. By balancing needs with marine conservation, we protect vulnerable habitats from extinction and reduce the risk of spread of diseases (called biosecurity). We can also protect people’s livelihoods, and preserve the beauty of our coastline and seas for generations to come. To achieve this balance is no easy feat but with collaboration, engagement, innovation, and funding I believe we can do so!
